With the new method elaborated by José Guerrerosantos and Sydney Coleman, 60-80 per cent of transplanted body fat cells can survive. This allows for a more harmonious structure in facial parts, e.g. lip enlargement and cheek enlargement as well as a smoothing of "citron wrinkles" on the upper lip, of nasal-labial-, marionette- and wrath-lines. It is also used for hand lifting and for penis enlargement.

Fat transfer not only compensates a lack of volume. A person's own body fat seems to take a natural rejuvenation effect on the skin. This might be explained by the fact that fat carries traces of the female hormone oestrogen which is a well-known natural "beautifier".

Autologous (the patient's own) muscle can be transplanted into the upper lip to smooth out vertical lipstick or smoker's lines. This procedure is recommended in conjunction with other operations. During an eyelid lift (eye tuck or blepharo-plasty) strips of muscle are usually removed and otherwise disposed of.
